I-9 Documents – Form I-9, also referred as Employment Eligibility Verification is a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services document. Mandated by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the form is used to confirm the identity and legal authorization to work of all paid employees working in the United States. Every American employer must complete the Form I-9 correctly for every employee they hire to work in the United States.

When Are Employers Required To Reverify Or Update I-9 Documents?
I-9 Documents – Employers must revise an employee’s paperwork only when the employee’s employment authorization documentation (EAD) or receipt is expired. Reverification must be done prior to the expiration date for the authorization to work. If the employer isn’t able to reverify the work authorization, then the worker’s job may end. People who are working on temporary work visas are encouraged to apply for extensions at least 90 days prior to the date they expire on their EAD. Certain categories of employment that make promptly EAD renewal applications could be granted automatic extensions of their expired EADs.
Employers are able to fill in the Section 3 of the original Form I-9, if it’s the current version of the form. If the original form is an earlier version of the Form I-9, the employer should either fill out Section 3 on the current version of the I-9 or fill out a new I-9 completely on the current version. Employers must add the new Form I-9 with the original.
If an employee issued an acknowledgment of a document at the time of completing the I-9 in the first place, he/she has 90 days to give the employer the updated document. The employer must use Section 3 on the current version of the Form I-9 to modify the information, or draw a line along the previous information (so that it remains accessible), insert the new information, and then sign and mark the change. If the employee presents another acceptable document within the time limit, the employer must complete Section 2 of the current Form I-9. Attach it to the original Form I-9.
I-9 forms with green cards that are expired then , they should not be issued again. Green cards are a permanent residence permit, which can be used in the United States. They expire like driver’s licenses. However, the expiration date does NOT mean that the holder has lost their authorization to work in the United States.
Employers may also amend Section 3 of the Form I-9 if the employee’s name changes. However, it’s not required to do so.
